From film to fashion: Romanian actor Alexandru Tomescu on working at the intersection of two worlds

How acting and editorial photography come together in his work across Europe and the United States

Romanian actor Alexandru Tomescu has built his career between Europe and the United States. Originally from Caracal in southern Romania, he trained at the New York Film Academy and is now based in Los Angeles, working across film, television, commercial productions, and editorial photography.

The intersection of acting and fashion has become a recurring element of Tomescu’s visual portfolio. His editorial portraits favour restrained lighting, muted palettes, and minimal styling, keeping the focus on character and expression. Rather than treating still photography as a separate part of his career, Tomescu sees it as an extension of his work in front of the film camera — with the same attention to character, mood, and presence.

The portraits

The portrait Tomescu names as his favourite is a black-and-white image in which his gaze falls slightly away from the camera. Light catches the left side of his face, while the right remains in shadow. The styling is deliberately minimal — a simple shirt, natural hair, and few distracting details — allowing the focus to remain on the subject.

Tomescu’s portfolio includes a feature in an online fashion magazine, brand campaigns, and a series of editorial test shoots and portrait sessions. Many share a similar visual language: warm light, softened compositions, and understated styling.

Since moving to Los Angeles, Tomescu has collaborated with photographers, stylists, and creative teams whose work spans both fashion projects and film.

The acting work

Alongside his editorial work, Tomescu continues to build his acting career. Two projects in particular stand out.

The first is his principal role in the launch film for România Educată, the national education project initiated by then-President Klaus Iohannis. According to Romania’s Presidential Administration, the seven-year project brought together more than 10,000 participants through regional debates and online consultations. Four policy briefs were also produced in cooperation with the OECD. The project provided the framework for the education laws signed by Iohannis at Cotroceni Palace on July 4, 2023. The launch film was also broadcast by Romanian media, including Știrile Pro TV.

Another of Tomescu’s screen roles is Adult Enzo in Sacrebleu: Chapter One, a French short film written and directed by Clément Oberto. The film premiered during the third United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice in June 2025.

According to the director’s portfolio, Sacrebleu is conceived as a story told across nine interconnected chapters. The project was scored by Ilya Lagutenko, frontman of the band Mumiy Troll. According to Oberto, the first chapter has received 16 festival awards.

Another short film featuring Tomescu is currently in post-production. The actor has not yet disclosed the title.

The style

Tomescu’s editorial work tends toward muted palettes, classical tailoring, and understated fabrics. The approach keeps the images visually restrained, allowing the focus to remain on the person rather than on elaborate styling.

“Each project has challenged me in a different way and helped shape my perspective as an artist,” Tomescu says of his broader practice.

His off-camera wardrobe follows a similarly understated approach, favouring clean silhouettes and pieces that translate naturally on camera. For Tomescu, fashion photography and acting remain connected parts of the same creative practice.

Working between Europe and the United States

In Los Angeles, Tomescu works across film, television, and commercial productions while continuing to develop his editorial portfolio.

“Working internationally has been a natural extension of that journey,” he says. “Coming from Romania has given me a unique perspective, while living and training in Los Angeles has allowed me to collaborate with creatives from around the world.”

Today, Alexandru Tomescu’s professional portfolio spans acting and editorial work across Europe and the United States — two areas he approaches as connected parts of the same creative practice.
